Day 3: A Song that Reminds Your of One/Both of Your Parents

Today’s post title calls for a song that reminds you of one or both of your parents but to be perfectly honest I don’t have any songs that remind me of my mother and her ex-husband. I just don’t. So I’m going to write about the song that reminds me of my maternal grandfather a.k.a. Papa.

Papa and Me circa 1982

I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day

When it’s cold outside,

I’ve got the month of May

I guess you’d say

What can make me feel this way?

When I was little, my Papa was like my dad. Everywhere he went I went. It was almost expected that when he showed up somewhere grasshopper would not be too far behind. Call me grasshopper and I might just cut you! He was everything to me! I never wanted to leave his side except to go potty, sleep and school. I feel like my life would be soooo different had he not passed away in 1991. I’m not sure how life would be but it definitely would be different. Before 1991, I never imagined my life without him. I thought he would at least see me graduate high school and college. As a kid you really don’t think that far ahead because your perception is slightly if not completely skewed. LOL you’re either a kid or extremely old at like 15!

My Girl, my girl, my girl

Talkin’ ’bout my girl

My girl

Every time I hear me and Papa’s song, I am instantly transported back to a time when I would sit beside my Papa at church. Or when he would let me drive our old blue Ford tractor when we would bail hay in the field across the road from the house. Or when we would stop at the little store in “town” to get his twenty-five cent coffee and candy for school.

I’ve got so much honey, the bees envy me

I’ve got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees

Well, I guess you’d say

What can make me feel this way?

My Girl, my girl, my girl

Talkin’ ’bout my girl

My girl

This song is soo very special to me. I don’t listen to it all the time but when I do, I can’t help but think about Papa and everything we used to do and everything I certainly wish I can do when I finally have another child.

Nerdtastic, Write?

I am an aspiring writer trying to find my place in the world. Writing makes me happy, save lives much like coffee, and keeps me grounded. To honestly know me is to understand my way of thinking, my quirky, sarcastic side comments, and left uppercut verbal jabs and side-eye death stares. I’m simplistic but can often be very complex in nature. I love life to the absolute fullest, but I am human; therefore, I have more than my fair share of ups and downs. I am a giant kid, so being goofy comes naturally to me. I secretly strive to be the next Ernest Hemingway, J.K. Rowling, Zora Neale Hurston, or Shonda Rhimes. I openly and stupidly wear every bit of my heart on my sleeve and refuse to apologize for or minimize my true, unedited feelings.

  1. The song that reminds me of my parents is “Lucero, Lucerito (Little Light of My Life)” by Mingo Saldivar. Lucero is one of my dad’s pet names for my mom. Man – I can’t believe they’ll have been married for 50 years later this year!! I can’t help but think of them when I hear this song and smile. I couldn’t find a video, but you can get a preview of the song here:
